What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a comprehensive system of health care, which encourages and promotes the body’s natural self-healing mechanisms using natural means only.
Treating the root cause of disease is very important in naturopathic medicine. We identify and address this root cause as opposed to simply managing and palliating symptoms. This leads to lasting and sustainable change.
Principles of Naturopathic Medicine
To give the body the best chance for self-healing, naturopaths operate within the guidelines of 6 time-tested principles.
- FIRST DO NO HARM:
Naturopaths utilize only safe and effective therapies that are not injurious to the patient.
- IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE CAUSE:
Naturopaths identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than merely suppressing symptoms.
- NATURES HEALING POWER:
The human body has an inherent self-healing process, and the role of the naturopath is to facilitate and augment this self-healing process with the aid of natural, non-toxic substances.
- TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON:
Naturopaths operate within an holistic philosophical frame work, treating the whole person (mind, body, and spirit) rather than just a disease or one part of the body.
- NATUROPATH AS TEACHER:
One aspect of the therapeutic approach of a naturopath is to guide and educate the patient as to what they can do to achieve and maintain health.
Remember the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Naturopaths assess risk factors and susceptibility to disease and institute appropriate interventions to prevent illness.
Your Naturopathic Consultation
During the initial consultation you will be asked detailed questions about your current illness and past medical history, along with an assessment of your diet and lifestyle. Stress levels and other relevant factors are also taken into account. As your naturopath I also use various diagnostic tools such as Iridology, Live Blood Analysis and different bio-resonance machines to find the underlying causes of your health problems.
Once a good understanding of your health condition is established, not just in terms of the name of the disease, but also in respect to what is the underlying cause, you and I then work together to establish a treatment and health-promoting program.
