No one ever wants to hear the words, “I’m sorry but you have cancer,” yet one in three will. It’s one of the few words in the English language that can invoke fear and dread in the hearts and minds of anyone unfortunate enough to be given that diagnosis. Although trillions of dollars have been funnelled into cancer research to date, yet it still remains an undeterrable foe. Worldwide, the number of newly diagnosed cancer cases per year is expected to rise to 23.6 million by 2030.
Considering the trillions of dollars spent to stop this deadly scourge, the death rate from the most common cancers has not changed. About a third of all people who develop cancer still die from the disease, just as they did 50 years ago. The cancer patients who die of their disease are the ones who experience metastatic spread of their tumours. Even with the most aggressive conventional treatments only 5 to 10 percent of these patients will survive long term. For the other 90 to 95 percent, the gruelling enormously expensive treatment will add no more than a few months to their lives. In fact, there’s evidence that those undergoing radical cancer treatment actually die sooner.
Even when cancers do appear to respond, these conventional treatments often erode away the patients own immune defences and end up doing more damage than good, or serve only as a temporary slowdown, leaving the door open for recurrence down the road.
But cash continues to pad the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies. The consensus is that they are our saviour. That the cure will appear in synthetic form – without any side effects. It hasn’t happened yet, nor will it! The truth is, there are many factors involved in the development of cancer, and equally there needs to be a multifactorial approach in its treatment, one that includes sound nutritional advice and guidance for fighting it.
